Cell Organelles

Organelles are microscopic, sub-cellular structures or compartments that are often membrane-bound. They perform specific and essential functions that keep a cell alive.

Organelles fall into one of two categories of cells: eukaryotic or prokaryotic. Prokaryotes are single-celled organisms and don’t have a nucleus. Eukaryotes may be either single-celled or multicellular and do have a nucleus.
